The Modal Verb 'Power': Semantic Values and Rhetorical Values
Main Article Content
Abstract
The notion of modality has never received, in linguistics, a clear and completely satisfactory definition. This is certainly the case for many reasons. but there is one which seems essential: we have too few descriptions of the specifically modal functioning of linguistic elements perceived as modal (they are rather described as auxiliaries, as adverbs, etc.). This lack of descriptions makes any attempt at theorizing very distorted.
This is why I will limit myself here to a certain number of observations, which fall within the domain of modality, concerning the verb power.
